I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving- maybe even watched one of my recommended Thanksgiving movies...hmm? Okay, you didn't have to watch one of the movies, but, the fact that yesterday was Thanksgiving is what has me here today, writing to your lovely selves...it's Black Friday.

Top 5 Thanksgiving Movie Picks
Hello Again Lovelies!
Happy almost Thanksgiving, or turkey day, or friendsgiving, whatever you may call it in your corner of the world! I know it's short notice, but I had a bit of a go trying to wrangle up five movies that really felt like Thanksgiving. There's not a lot of cinema out there that focuses on Thanksgiving, and those that do, typically end up going into Christmas as well. So, rather than trying to find those movies, I opted instead for movies that gave off those thankful, grateful, blessed, family, love feels. So, though they may not have anything to do with Thanksgiving, I think that you'll agree they feel like Thanksgiving. So, let's get started! Oh! And just like with my Halloween list, the movie titles are links to Amazon if you decide you want to purchase one-I try to make it easy for you.
Umm, hello, does it get more Thanksgiving than this? Family, love, gratitude, blessings, and football? Granted, I don't partake in the whole watching football on Thanksgiving, I'm more of a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kind of gal, but I know there's a very religious following of football watchers come Thanksgiving day! And bonus, they actually have a Thanksgiving scene, woo! So it double fits the bill...check and check!
Again super Thanksgiving feels here! You're going to fall in love with this little family, and how much they love each other, support each other, etc. Auggie is an amazing character that has every reason to be scared or afraid of life, but he embraces it, and how he flourishes! The entire film will have you rethinking how you interact with people, wanting to be your best self, and wanting to hug your family, and really embrace those that love you. It's a beautiful, inspiring film that is going to give you all the "#blessed" feels.
Gah, this movie! I just watched this for the first time a week ago, and it was adorable! It gave me all the family, acceptance, love, etc, feels. Paddington is so adorable, you can't help but love that adorable little bear with the marmalade habit! It's an adorable film that fills you with the warm and fuzzies-bear puns aside. You have to give it a try if you haven't already!
And also, I have to say, I love kids movies that don't go too dark, that are just a light easy watch-think Bee Movie or Emperor's New Groove-and this one delivers. So, if you or your kiddos want a nice, easy movie to try, this one will be the ticket! Cheerio, I dare say!
This movie! I just rewatched this last night, and it is still just as sweet and beautiful as I remembered. It's about a young man that learns he can travel in time. It follows his quest for love, and his love of family. Equal parts funny and poignant, it's a beautiful film. And at the end, you really get those grateful feels, as he says how he chooses to use his time traveling abilities. A movie about love, in all of its forms-the love you have for your parents, your siblings, your significant other, your friends, and your children...it really is a lovely film.
Alright, last but not least, we finish with one final family film that centers around coming together and working together to make life the life you never thought you'd have. It's an adorably sweet film, based on a true story, that just makes you want to do something crazy with your family, just because you can. "All you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, and I promise you something good will come of it." If that doesn't give you the inspiration you need to add this to your list of Thanksgiving movies, well, then I just don't even know what else there is to say.

2- Wonder

4- About Time
Bonus/Runner Up: Frozen
Woo! You only thought we were done...bonus movie again! So this one is now, last but not least. And, I know, I know, Frozen gets enough air time, we don't need to add more reasons to play it....again. But it's a delightful little movie, and, it's got snow, and winter feels, which kind of seem like Thanksgiving, right? Right. Though, I suppose if you really can't bring yourself to watch it again, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Moana, Lilo & Stitch, The Incredibles, or even 101 Dalmations are all good "family-focused" movies for you to sub out for this one.
So! There you have it! My top picks for movies to watch this week leading up to Thanksgiving, and maybe even the day of-rather than football. Let me know in the comments what your favorites are, or what you think of adding these to your "to-watch" list. Also, if you've seen Instant Family, would you add it to the list? I haven't seen it yet, but it is on my list! Maybe next year it can be an add-on...decisions, decisions.
Wishing you all a wonderful, and meaningful, Thanksgiving this year. And may you gobble till you wobble!
xoxo

My 5 Halloween Movie Favorites
Hello Lovelies,
It's fall! And it's finally October, time to start celebrating the harvest season and Halloween! Now, since this month is the month of Halloween, I wanted to share my five favorite Halloween movies for those of you that might be in the market for some spooky, but kid friendly, haunts. Next month I'll try and wrangle up some more harvest, fall inspired movies to get you through Thanksgiving without starting on your Christmas collection. Now, I am all for the cutesy, fun Halloween-who doesn't love a good pupper dressed as a ghost? So, if you've got little ones, you're in luck, because they'll probably be able to watch these too! Oh, and the movie titles are links to Amazon if you want to read the full plot summary or go ahead and purchase one of these bad boys. So, without further ado, here we go!
1- Halloweentown
It's a movie about a town where it's Halloween all the time...umm, duh it's number 1. And let's be honest, the entire Halloweentown series makes the list here. But, for conversation's sake, we're just going to list the first one. I remember recording this onto VHS while it was airing because I loved it so much. This movie is probably the epitome of Halloween for me! And, fun fact, the town of St. Helens in Oregon is where they filmed the movie, so you can go and see the town square with the pumpkin and City Hall!
2- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Okay, this might not be Halloween by nature, but it's witches and wizards and the first taste of magic for our young hero, Harry. Again, feel free to watch the entire series, but for ease, I've only listed the first here. And in full disclosure, I watch this at Christmas time as well. Something about Harry having his first Christmas with Ron and actually getting presents...I don't know, but it gives me the warm and fuzzies.
3- Hotel Transylvania
Alright, apparently I have a thing for movie series...because this is also Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2...I promise this is the last one! It's just, how can you not love a movie about Dracula as a dad? The answer? You can't not love it.
4- October Kiss
Ha! Not a series! Now, this is a Hallmark one, which means, if you've ever seen a Hallmark movie, you know how it's going to go, but it's adorable! The two kids are cute, and they get so into the holiday spirit it really reminds you how much fun the holidays can be. And Ashley Williams is one of my favorite Hallmark actresses-she's so darn lovable-so that automatically gives it favorite movie points!
5- The Princess & the Frog
And to round out the list, despite not necessarily being a Halloween movie, is my girl, Tiana. Now, I have a soft spot for Tiana because I feel like I'm a mix of her and Rapunzel, so even though it may not be Halloween exactly, it's got voodoo magic and a masquerade party in the movie, so it's kind of Halloween by proxy, right?
And I have to give two honorable mentions, because let's be honest, there's more than enough time in the month of October to watch more than the five movies listed above...not to mention, I love giving you guys more than you bargained for :)
Runner Up #1- The Phantom of the Opera
Gah, just thinking about this one gets the spooky feels going! Though, no, it's not exactly a Halloween movie, the mystery of the Phantom, another masquerade ball, and the fire dance scene of Point of No Return...chills! Oh, and if the main theme with the pounding organs and trumpeting brass isn't on your Halloween playlist...umm, what are you even listening to?
Runner Up #2- Coco
This movie isn't so much about Halloween, but the Day of the Dead, or All Souls Day, but it's a good one nonetheless! There are two movies out there that are very similar in feel: Coco and The Book of Life. In my humble opinion, don't even bother with BoL. Coco nails it...while BoL barely hobbles along. (I couldn't even finish it-don't get me started on the lack of original music or why a movie about a Mexican holiday didn't bother casting Mexican, or at least Latino, actors and actresses...Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana, really? There weren't any actors available to make a movie about their own culture? But I digress!) Hands down, Coco is the better movie, and it will get you in the holiday spirit, while maybe teaching you a thing or two about another culture too! Score!
So, there you go lovelies! Seven, not five(bonus!), Halloween movies to get your family-friendly, but Halloween-y, vibes on! Let me know in the comments your favorites or thoughts on these ones. Wishing you and yours a ghoulishly good time this Halloween season!

What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
Hello Lovelies,
A bright moon and stars twinkled and shone. Wishing you a belated Mid-Autumn Festival, bliss, and happiness!
For those of you that don't know, I'm Taoist, which is a Chinese philosophy or religion based on the writings of Lao-tzu that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao-the unplanned rhythms of the universe. As such, the second most important holiday as a practicing Taoist, is Mid-Autumn Festival. Now, the Mid-Autumn Festival, or the moon or mooncake festival, is celebrated with the first full moon of autumn-also known as the harvest moon. To the Chinese, a full moon is a symbol of reunion, harmony, and happiness. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival was Monday, September 24th.
Now, if you're wondering why it's called the Mid-Autumn Festival when it's just after autumn has officially begun, it's because the Chinese holidays follow the lunar calendar-think Chinese New Year. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, which corresponds to a full moon.
To give you a little backstory on what the festival is about, I'm going to pull from the blog China Highlights:
"The most famous Mid-Autumn Festival story is Chang'e flying to the moon. The story goes like this…
Long, long ago, there were ten suns in the sky. The suns burnt all the plants and people were dying on Earth, until one day excellent archer Hou Yi used his bow and arrows to shoot down nine of the suns. Earth was saved, and people flocked to learn archery from Hou Yi.
The Western Queen Mother gave Hou Yi a bottle of elixir that could make one person immortal. Although Hou Yi did want to become immortal, he wanted to stay with his wife Chang'e more. Therefore, he just kept it at home.
Pang Meng, one of his students, tried to seize the elixir when Hou Yi wasn't at home. Faced with greedy Pang Meng, Chang'e decided to drink the elixir. It made her fly to the moon where she would stay forever.
To remember her and pray to her, Hou Yi and others started to worship the moon with many offerings.
Chang'e's image usually appears on Mid-Autumn Festival pictures. Children in China are told that Chang'e is still living on the moon. And on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the moon is bright, children try their best to find the shape of Chang'e on the moon."

There is also a story regarding the "jade rabbit", which makes for rabbits to be another common thematic element to the holiday. Again, pulling from China Highlights, the story of the jade rabbit is as follows:
"Chinese children are told that the jade rabbit is on the moon with Chang'e. Here's the story…
Once upon a time, there were three animals living in a forest: a fox, a rabbit, and a monkey.
Three immortals, pretending to be beggars, went through the forest asking for food. The fox and the monkey quickly offered them food.
The rabbit, who was less resourceful but very pious, felt guilty. She said, “I'm so sorry I couldn't offer any food to help you, but I can give myself”, and jumped into the fire.
The three immortals were moved by the rabbit's sacrifice, and decided make the rabbit an immortal, sending her to live in the Moon Palace."
So, as you can see, the moon is the most important element to this holiday, but you may be wondering-she also called it the mooncake festival...what are mooncakes? Does she mean moon-pie? No, not quite. See, the easiest translation to an American holiday would be Thanksgiving. The Chinese people gather with family and spend a good portion of the day making dinner, and there's a very traditional dessert served-no not pumpkin or pecan pie...mooncakes! Now, what is a mooncake?
Well, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure...the best that I can deduce is that they're kind of like a fruit cake-no one really knows what's in them, but you eat them, and some people quite like them...but, most people aren't a fan of the original version, so they go for more ornate versions that are more tasty. In essence it's a smorgasbord of ingredients pureed together to make a kind of paste beneath a round and decorated shell. I've had lotus seed, white lotus seed, and chocolate lava. They're a bit different of a texture for the first time you try them, but the white lotus seed seemed almost peanut butter-y in flavor, with a somewhat gelatinous texture? If you've had one, and you want to chime in with better texture and flavor terminology, help me out! The chocolate lava, for some reason, had a bit of a banana flavor to it...maybe I got a bad batch, maybe that's normal, I'm not sure!
Now, there is one rule to follow for eating your mooncake: you wait for the sun to set, and then you head out to somewhere you can clearly see the moon, and then you eat your mooncake(one mooncake typically gets divided between family members) beneath the moon. It's very typical to have another small picnic beneath the moon. And if you go and visit someone, tradition dictates you bring a gift, typically a mooncake.
But, you've had your dinner, you've had your mooncake....now what?
Well, lanterns are the final piece to this holiday. Kiddos decorate lanterns in school or at home during the day, much like American kids make those hand turkeys in elementary school. And speaking of little ones, there are small lanterns on wands, think like a kite, that they run around and play with once the moon comes out and you've had your mooncakes or picnic. Also, if you happen to have the lanterns that you're able to light a candle in and set afloat in the air, your kiddos can write their well wishes on the lanterns and send them off. Lastly, depending on where you live, there even may be an event at Chinese cultural center that can include a lantern show or a dragon/lion dance.
You will see round lanterns in particular everywhere, but also a lot of round shapes, regardless of what they are. Everything about this holiday revolves around the moon-revolves get it? Pun intended!
So, now you know all about the Mid-Autumn Festival! Sorry, it's a bit late, but better late than never! Well, until next time, lovely readers, wishing you and your family a belated, but happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
xoxo

5 ways to improve your life TODAY
Hello Lovelies,
And here's the deal, lovely reader, you are in control here. If you notice yourself giving energy to things that don't serve you, gently redirect yourself to something that does. You have that power! We live in this amazing age where the world is literally at our fingertips, but we spend it getting riled up and therefore feeling small and brittle. Don't fall for the trap that says you need to live angry and hurt and less-than. You do NOT need to keep up with the Jones's. You do you, sweetheart! Understand and embrace that you and the Jones's are different people and what floats their boat, probably doesn't float yours. And that's awesome, because how boring would it be if it did? I mean really, why do we always get creeped out by those perfect Utopia movies, where everyone is the same, yet still try and follow that exact recipe in our daily lives? Break the mold! Get out there, chase your dreams, embrace your hobbies, and understand that people are beautiful and flawed and crazy! But that's what makes it wonderful.
Welcome back! I hope you're ready, because I'm going to give you a crash course of super basic things to implement into your every day, starting today, that will lead to a happier, healthier you! Now, before we get started, I need you to promise me this-repeat after me:
I will not say "I can't do that" or make excuses. I am here because I want to change my life for the better. I will give these steps due process and genuinely put forth the effort to implement them.
Okay? You promise? Pinky promise? Let me tell you, beautiful, this isn't one of those things that I can tell you what to do and you're magically better. You get out what you put in. So you've got to put in your effort, give it your genuine heartfelt intention, and then, and only then, will you see improvement.
I promise, I've got your hand, we're taking baby steps here, I won't ask you to do anything unreasonable here! And as always, do what you can with what you have. Alright, without further ado, let's dig in!
Step 1- Since we adults spend an average of two hours a day on social media, our first step:
Unfollow or block people that make you feel less than on social media.
Stop thinking you have to follow, like, and comment every time someone posts about their dinner or their kid or their vacation, or anything else for that matter. If when you scroll by you feel anything negative, nix it! That simple! Don't offer excuses, this is for your mental well-being, and at the end of the day, that ball is in your court. You owe no one else an apology or an explanation. You do what you gotta do sister! Oh, and whatever you do, NEVER read the comments...anywhere. They're never good, most always negative. Just do yourself the favor, don't give them your time or attention. The goal here is to insulate your life from negativity, a key element for future happiness.

See him? He's cleaning up his social media feed. Positive vibes only! |
Step 2- Do follow people that inspire you, follow hashtags of things that inspire you or make you happy!
Think outside the box, but insulate your feed with things that lift you up instead of draining you. If you like cat memes, cat meme it up! If you like ballet, follow ballet houses, follow ballerinas, follow local art scenes, etc. It doesn't matter what it is, this is YOUR social media feed, let it grow YOU. Don't let it just be some arbitrary status you think you have to maintain. Let your feed become a manifestation of you. When someone scrolls through your social media feed, they should be able to clearly see your interests and hobbies, things that motivate you, and things that inspire you...if you just follow celebrities, family, or old classmates, maybe think about changing that up. After all, some of those people might be helping you grow, but you need more than the expected friends and family to really flush out your feed to give you soul food every time you open your preferred app.

Step 3- Take 5 minutes to stop and write out the following:
Things that make you happy
Things you do every day
Compare the lists...adjust accordingly.
You need to find some bit of joy every day or you'll go CRAZY! So, make those lists and once you have at least one thing you enjoy doing on your list of what you do everyday, stick with it. Let your soul rest at least once a day while you do something just for you. And you don't have to shoot for the moon here. Do you like painting? Spend 10-30 minutes painting a few days a week. Do you like reading, spend 10-30 minutes reading the other days of the week! We're not reinventing the wheel here folks. The goal is simple: add to your pile of good things. We aren't trying to make this step your complete guide to happiness, hence why there's more than just this on the list. All we are doing is adding little bits of joy to our day.

Step 4- Get moving!
I know, everyone hates seeing this one, but everyone tells you to do it for a reason! Get outside, get fresh air, get unplugged from the constant deluge of information we receive. Turn off the TV! If nothing else, unplugging alone will help you feel better, but getting up and actually moving your body, even better! Now, before you freak out, I'm not saying go run a marathon. Be reasonable with yourself, you know what you can handle and what would be sufficient for you. Take 15 minutes and just go be in nature. Take a walk, an amble, even. Don't have your headphones in, tempting though it may be, just get out there and really see nature, experience it.
I live in Arizona, so I know it's not always delightful to take a walk when it's 110 outside, and if that's the case, do some basic yoga or stretching at home, but maybe try to have the window open or at least have the blinds open to fake your brain into thinking you're getting a nature fix. You have your phone either in your hand or nearby, Google some beginner yoga poses, yin yoga even, and just stretch your body. Show your body some love. I'm not saying you need to break a sweat, I'm just saying don't just sit around.
Per the US Dept of Health and Human Services, less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical exercise each day...and only one in three gets the recommended amount of physical activity each week! What!? You have this amazing body that is how you're capable of all the things you're capable of, don't forget to use it for more than sitting in the car, then sitting at work, then sitting on the couch. Let it move, let it breathe. I promise, it doesn't have to be running or going to the gym, just move, however you like! Ballroom dancing, kayaking, rock climbing, the options are endless!
Step 5- Lastly, do something self-indulgent.
You've already done four steps of indulgence, but give yourself one more. Treat yourself to something, an act of self care, no matter what that may be. It may be taking a bath, when you normally do a shower. Maybe you get your nails done, rather than doing them at home. Heck, maybe you go to the grocery store and buy yourself that Ben and Jerry's that you've been eyeing, but know you don't need. You've made huge progress already, cutting out toxicity, replacing it with inspiration, you've taken a look at how to incorporate happiness into your everyday life, and you did some exercise...if all of that doesn't say you deserve some form of praise, some internal high-five, I don't know what does!

You can choose how extreme you need to go with these five steps, and whatever you choose is fine. I've blocked everyone on social media and started from scratch before, because that's what I needed at the time. And I've followed different things for different stages of my life. That moody Instagram I was super into five years ago, yeah, that's not doing so much for me anymore. But the astrology memes account I recently found, oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about! You aren't stagnant, you're going to change, with your life, and in spite of it. That's okay. In the words of Bruce Lee: "The idea is that flowing water never goes stale, you just keep on flowing." Don't let yourself become so stuck somewhere that you don't see that you're stuck. Allow yourself to ebb and flow with life.
At the end of the day, you're taking care of yourself just by being here. You've taken the first step. Now let's see you implement these steps, and watch how your life changes!
Bonus step for getting all the way through, for really showing you intend to change your life, now!
Take the TV out of your bedroom.
I know, I know! I've heard the rebuttals before, I know in our crazy society the mere thought of taking a TV out of your home is...shocking! But! Hear me out! You promised you'd give these steps your best! At least give this one a try. So, the reason I say this, the NY Times reports that adults watch an average of 5 hours of TV every day! And sleep.org says: "You might feel like you can fall asleep just fine after your show wraps up, but your sleep can still be affected. The blue light exposure can delay the onset of REM sleep and lead to morning drowsiness. In other words, even if you think that you’re sleeping fine, you might not be getting the quality sleep that you need."
I will tell you, I fought against this step for awhile, probably a few years before it actually happened, since my husband had to be on board too. But now, I don't even notice that it's gone. I don't feel like I'm missing out. I just wake up feeling more rested. And if you're wondering, well, what do you do in your evenings then? The answer is simple, nothing! I lay in bed and let the day run through my brain, trying to focus on the good parts. There's a full article here by Barb Schmidt about how to get started on this practice of reflection. But for a quick intro, here's an idea of what we're talking about:
"Reflection is our final exercise of the day. This is when we scan our day and “officially” let go of everything that happened in the day—all the ups and downs—so that we can wake up the next morning in the new day without attachments or regrets over what happened the day before. Without yesterday’s worries and stresses weighing us down, we can begin a new day with a peaceful mind and heart.
But if that doesn't sound appealing to you, what are some things you can try? Trying reading a paper book-not an e-book! Just make sure you have the self-control to not stay up all night to finish it...as I've been known to do on occasion. Try journaling, even if it's just about the new song you heard today, or the beautiful sunset you saw, or the fact that the PSL came out today (yay!)- try making a journal to mark where you are and what sets your heart on fire, right now. Chat with your partner, chat with your dog, or cat. And absolute last resort, if you need to watch those favorite TV shows, try recording them and watching them earlier in the evening the following day. I promise, whatever you choose, you'll feel better! There are some days I don't watch TV at all, others that I watch two episodes or a movie, but that's all. As always, be reasonable with yourself! You don't have to go cold turkey, just moderate your consumption.

Well, lovelies, that's all for now! I hope you start implementing these tips today, and I promise you'll see your life improve. And this is just to start, feel free to go more "radical" as you do these daily! Maybe you start walking around the neighborhood for half an hour each day. Maybe you start watching only show per day. Maybe you delete your main social media app from your phone so you're forced to be less active. Maybe you start going to bed earlier. Maybe you take a retreat to really indulge in self care. Whatever it may be, you do you! Only you can say what you need, but I promise, the more you insulate your world from negativity, shower it with positive vibes, build bits of joy into your daily routine, exercise, and care for yourself, you'll find yourself moving through life with a bit more ease, with a bit more joy, with a more grateful heart. And maybe, just maybe, you'll find yourself happier more often. Maybe you'll find your life is just a teensy bit better than it was before you started this list.
Best of luck loves! Let me know what you think in the comments-though try not to be negative! What was your favorite step to implement, what was the hardest, do you notice an improvement?
Xoxo

Aesthetics of Joy
Hello Lovelies,
Do you remember me? I know it's been an age since we last spoke, but alas, I've returned from the dead!
